I need some advice on whether or not Columbia is still the best choice for me. I accepted being on the waitlist immediately because, between Columbia and the other school I was considering, Columbia seemed like the better option. I’m interested in creative writing, theater, and music, and being in New York while studying those subjects at an Ivy League university was very appealing.
However, I got into one of the top ten public universities in the United States, which is an excellent school. As time has passed, I’ve become more connected to that school. I filled out housing applications and will be living in a learning community with fellow artists. I am part of an honors program with advanced classes, and I’m already filling out orientation and registration information.
But I didn’t get into the musical theater major at the public university, which has a very reputable program, and I could still have the chance to pursue that major at Columbia. At the public university, I would have to reapply for the major in my sophomore year. So if I went to my backup I’d be taking no music related courses for at least a year.
While Columbia offers better academic opportunities in my areas of interest, I’m conflicted. I’ve started building many connections at the public university, and I’m not sure if I should leave those behind for a potential spot at Columbia.
id selfishly say dont go to columbia, but if you feel closer to one over the other, id consider what type of environment you would feel most comfortable in, the career opportunities that could come, and the social life. you are going to get a great education regardless, so that should be comforting. also think about whether the prestige that comes with the ivy league school is worth spending 400k (if youre paying full tuition) compared to a public school. good luck!
My advise to everyone on waitlists is go ahead and fall in love with the school that you will most likely attend, so you’re doing exactly the right thing. In most cases the odds of getting called off the waitlist are as low or lower than being admitted in the first place and less predictable since the number pulled is different every year and zero some years and since it biases regionally and economically more than the original admissions, and in general its random luck what “type” of students they need to fill for it.
Only you can answer if you are ready to truly move on and forget about this option. But even if you leave the possibility of Columbia open, stop sweating it – stop checking here. Just forget about it until you get a notification.
It seems your intuition is telling you that your local school is a better fit for you. Some people thrive in a highly competitive environment like Columbia’s, and yes, you will gain advantageous networking by going to an Ivy League. I think you will find yourself happy at your public university; going to Columbia does not mean you will be given a better outlet for your interests. Keep in mind that professors at Columbia are also extremely research-centric, with less time to devote to their students and teaching. You may get a better education, and have a better student experience, at your public university.
In the end it doesn’t matter which of 2 great schools you choose to go to (bc both are great) but what you Did there. Also most colleges will have good campus life and night life as a student but the questions is where will you work the hardest during the day. Where can you achieve more and a great GPA to graduate with. Where will you be most comfortable and find your balance so that you can hit the ground running.
Just some food for thought
(And yes absolutely…financials should be considered)
Good Luck!
nothing?
do you guys think they’ll even send it out tomorrow? I know tomorrow is last day but they can technically just keep pushing it
it could go until the 30th they said so ig its just not happening today
my guess is that columbia either has A) so many gaps leftover due to a lower yield and are STILL reviewing apps or B) they are basically done, and if one of their currently admitted students decide to unenroll in the middle of summer, then they will replace with a waitlist.
B seems more likely, though Columbia having a high yield this year would surprise me
Why finished with CEAS? Haven’t heard anything about it…
A does make sense though given the recent events
It’s SEAS as in School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
Or C, it’s not unusual for some of the Ivys and Ivy+ to trickle slots off the waitlist and not announce its closed until well into June and sometimes July. I wouldn’t read anything into it one way or the other.
I don’t think Columbia will do waves at all this year. If anything, they pick random people off whenever they feel like it. It could honestly happen whenever so stay hopeful and be on the lookout!
