Combining Interests?

I wasnt really sure where to put this so I just decided to put it here. I was just thinking today about where I want to go in life, possible majors, interests etc. and I was running into a bit of a stumbeling block. So first off I have great interest in psychology, history, politics, and business. Im not superb at math but I do enjoy the number crunching (dont ask me why). History Ive loved all my life and psychology just fascinates me. I was wondering, is there any practical way to combine these interests into a study program and eventually a career? Just wondering what kind of ideas you guys can throw at me.

Thanks

I assume you are not yet in college? In that case, relax, don’t think about majors, much less careers yet. College is about discovering who you are and what you can become. You will take classes in subjects that you never encountered before, and you may discover that your love for certain subjects has waned, or that you are not quite as good in some subjects as you thought. Conversely, you may discover a whole new passion. My favorite story is that told to me by someone who went to Columbia as a prospective English major. He was told by his English teacher that since he was embarked on a career in literature (he loved poetry), he ought to take something totally different. So he took a course along the lines of “Physics for Poets.” Four years later, he graduated as a physics major and took part in the Manhattan Project.
Who knows, a similar conversion experience awaits you.

I agree with everything marite has said. That said, there will be ways to combine several of your interests in a career. Just as an example, in psychology you might go in the research direction. Your research could well involve a lot of statistics (your number crunching). So you might want to try a Statistics course in college - it would be useful in the fields of psychology, business, certainly politics and could be in historical research also. People in the polling business (no flames, please) combine pretty much all of your interests - it is a business seeking clients, it is active in the field of politics, involves psychology in developing questions and touches on history as well. Just an example.

I understand, I just like to think and wonder a lot so just kinda getting some ideas is fun sometimes.

Hey, an interesting social science for you might be economics! I think it’s fun that you’re exploring and thinking about combining interests.

I am in the same spot except I am applying for college now (I am assuming that you are not applying yet since you sound like you are just planning ahead).

I loved psychology but I don’t want to go to med school. I don’t have a serious weakness in my subjects nor have a serious brilliance. I am putting down business (hopefully with an emphasis on marketing and international business) as my major because business does open large array of careers you can pursue. And marketing involves creativity and analytical skills.

I agree that it is fun to think ahead. To have an idea is always better than going into something completely clueless. That’s just my two pennies of thoughts.

Good luck.

I am applying to college now. SUNY Geneseo and Albany. I dont know which way I will go but its always interesting to get a lot of views on an issue, opens good discussion and promotes thought. (which I do too often anyways

any other insights?
