We have Comcast triple play - landline, cable and internet. We currently have an old Comcast modem that works okay but the wifi range is not quite what we need. Comcast has repeatedly called asking us to switch to a new modem so we can become a hotspot plus supposedly get faster download speeds.
Not interested in becoming a hotspot so we tried to buy our own upgraded modem. Because of the triple play there is only one approved modem with phone that you can purchase outright and it has poor wifi range.
First question, does anyone have a wifi extender that they love? And second, has anyone figured a work around the triple play modem issue?
We discussed buying a cable and internet only modem and not hooking up the landline which we don’t need anyway. I am pretty sure that Comcast would have a problem with that solution. Unfortunately, dropping the landline from the bill makes our bill increase.
DH is addicted to live sports so dropping Comcast completely is not an option.
I went throughout the same conversation (on line chat) with Comcast about a month ago. I kept pushing her on details and challenging the pricing and she magically relented and said if I agreed to a 2 year commitment that I would get the same service I currently have (double play) and go from $240 down to $120…plus I got HBO and Starz for $2.50 a month. Works for me!
Kajon, I had the same luck. This afternoon I called the retention # about reducing our bill and/or services and they took $50 per month off of my $200 bill with no contract. Starz is included but no HBO. Your 50% off is a great deal!
Then I called tech to see if we could use the Comcast “approved” modem that I purchased through Amazon that doesn’t have enough connections for triple play. The young man had a heavy accent but was very helpful. We hooked up cable and internet and ignored the phone line. I was very surprised that he let me jerry-rig a modem that doesn’t really work with our account. I think the language barrier probably worked in my favor.
So now we have a $50 per month reduction in our bill and $10 per month off for using our own modem. The modem was $100 so that purchase will break even in 10 months.

We have a $30 Netgear wifi extender the we bought off the shelf at Best Buy that works very well. It plugs into an outlet for power and syncs up the the main router easily. No complaints at all.
