COME HERE AND CRUSH MY DREAMS

The weakest part of my app is my freshmen gpa and class rank. I did have a HUGE upward trend however.

Gender: Male
Ethnicity: Asian ( unfortunately )
State: Texas
GPA: 3.7 uw ( Huge upward trend 3.0 freshmen year ----> 3.9 Junior Year )
Class Rank: 126/835 (About 15% unfortunately)
Test scores :

ACT (34 cumulative : 33 English, 34 Reading, 34 Science, 32 Math )

SAT subject tests
US History: 760
Math II: 760
World history: 700

Took about 5 APs ( freshmen - junior ) and I’m going to take 5 more senior year.

My EC’s aren’t very abundant but I think they’re pretty good.
EC’s:

Started a Card Distribution non-profit ( not an official non-profit ) - partnership with an entire school district, and about 4 giant churches giving out thousands of cards every 3 months to veterans, elderly, hospice patients, cancer patients, soldiers, Ect. (11,12)

Debate Team Captain (9,10,11,12) - Top 32 in state, Buncha random awards.

UNICEF Club Founder and President - Raised $3000 total.

Service: ( About 400 hours) -
World Changers service trip to Arkansas
New Mexico Service Trip
Guatemala Service Trip
Big Brother Big Sister Foundation
Gave out flowers to nursing homes
Church Tutoring Service

If I added the card organization I started it would be like 1000+ hours but eh.

Expect my recs to be like 8/10, but my essays to be 9-10/10

Now my list ( this is where you crush my dreams )

I put two EDs in this last just because I’m curious which school I have a higher chance at. I put ED and RD on both.

Cornell (ED) AND (RD)
Rice (ED) AND (RD) - ( keep in mind I live in Texas )
Vanderbilt ( ED II ) -
University of Rochester-
Carnegie Mellon University - (HSS, MCS,SCS,IS)
WashU in St.Louis
UCLA -
Berkeley -
UT austin - ( not guaranteed admittance = pretty difficult )
UW Madison -
Baylor -
Texas A&M -

My rank makes me the most nervous. I was going to put Brown and Upenn on the list but it’s near impossible without being in the top 10%

Cornell: Reach
Rice: Reach
Vanderbilt: Reach
CMU HSS: High match
CMU MCS/SCS/Heinz: Reach
WUSTL: Reach
UCLA: Match (can you pay full-freight?)
Berkeley: Match (can you pay full-freight?)
UWI: Low match
Baylor: Safety
UT-Austin: Match/High match (depends on unit)
TAMU: Low match

@Catria‌

Thanks for the chance! What do you mean by (depends on unit) on UT austin? Do you mean it depends on which department I apply for? I’m thinking computer science. How does that affect my chances?

And also since CMU ignores freshmen year, my gpa would be a 3.8. Does that help at all?

UT-Austin: High match

Hmmm. Only one safety. Could I consider Purdue a safety?

Your ACT is a 33, not a 34.

Purdue: Safety

Crap sorry I meant a 33 Math

@Catria

thanks!

apply ED to rice. They have 46 percent of their class coming from texas meaning its way easier to get in if your in state. Thats your best bet in my opinion.

The only reason Rice has a large percentage from in state is because most apply from in state. Being out of state is a HUGE advantage.

@noel597‌
@spuding102‌

I do believe noel597 is correct. Rice is trying to increase their out of state diversity so it’s become more difficult for Texas residents to get accepted into rice.
I have heard they are VERY big on class rank, ESPECIALLY for Texas residents - which is my obvious weakness.

Do you think at this point cornell will provide me with a slightly higher chance because I’m a Texas resident? Gah making decisions are so difficult.

If thats the case then I would consider ED to Cornell, Vanderbilt, or WUSTL

@TwixCollege‌ if u can raise GPA and rank a little, i think u cud get in to cornell, How big is that card distribution thing??? remem, if u look at the stats, only 5% of kids got in with a class rank of 25%, i think, correct if im wrong, but if u hav the percentages on ur side, u cud be in

Although your class rank isn’t amazing, I think the card distribution thing (depending on how successful it is, how well known it has become) could be a big plus on your application. Your GPA is also decent (and upwards trend), so Cornell might not be too far off… If you retook the SAT subect tests and got them closer to 780-800, it’s not too unrealistic
