Come on Rice, why must you make things difficult?

Earlier this week, I deposited $800 at Carnegie Mellon with the full intention of going there. Today I was out with some friends and received a call from the Rice University Office of Admissions, telling me that they were very pleased that I was still interested. The lady on the phone then proceeded to say that I’d been offered a place in the Class of 2014 off the waitlist. I am ecstatic but now I have a really tough decision to make. Has anybody else been in a similar situation in which they got in off the waitlist before May 1? Also, I know I can probably do a lot of this research myself but is it plausible to schedule a visit to Rice for next week? I live in New Jersey and will be majoring in electrical engineering, by the way. Thank you very much!

Since Owl Days and Admit Day are over/almost over (if possible, you can still make it to the April 26, Admit Day), I think it is plausible to visit Rice. I think it’s a good idea to schedule an individual visit. Unfortunately, you can’t attend a class or have an overnight visit since it is pass April 15. But I think visiting the campus and having lunch with a student can help you get a better understanding of the campus environment.([Rice University | Undergraduate Admission: Future Owls](http://www.futureowls.rice.edu/futureowls/Special_Programs.asp))

Also, there are other members on the CC forum that got off waitlist too: jchartier and mtb987. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/rice-university/914368-declining-admission.html</a></p>

Yeah, next week is exam week, so you wouldn’t be able to sit on classes. However, I think lunch hosting will be available next week; call the admissions office and see what options are available.

Also, be grateful Rice offered u a spot off the waitlist… Rice didn’t admit any one off the waitlist last year.

Since it’s still before May 1st, maybe you can get your deposit back from CMU (that is, if you decide to enroll at Rice instead). Explain to the CMU admissions office that your acceptance to Rice was unexpected and that you were on the waitlist at the time that you deposited the $800. If you’re nice about it, they may possibly refund you your money.

I just sent my deposit to Johns Hopkins on tuesday thinking there was no hope to get off the waitlist at Rice. I was wrong. The call was such a great surprise today.

I was starting to really like Hopkins, but I had to let it go along with a $600 deposit. I visited Rice in Sept. and absolutely loved it. Can’t wait for Rice this fall!! Ill be doing electrical engineering as well btw.
