Comfort TV, 'fess up here

Painful to admit–Gossip Girl…I tell myself it is to analyze DD’s schoolmates’ backgrounds and motives- strictly sociological research. But isn’t Chuck Bass just a young, prep version of JR Ewing??

House
What Not to Wear
GILLMORE GIRLS!
older Seventh Heaven
Friends

always Mary Tyler Moore
the first Bob Newhart
Dick Van Dyke

The older Andy Griffith. I think we’re all fortunate that they chose to make Mayberry an all Caucasian town in NC…I fear that the way African American townsfolk would have been portrayed in 1960 would have made it impossible to air the shows today.

My husband loves the Honeymooners, but it really depresses me. It is probably one of the more realistic sit coms ever but the thought of being a “housewife” in that tiny, grimy flat is bleak.

Note that in I Love Lucy, their living conditions were also realistic - just a small flat with no dining room, two bedrooms, etc. It’s so wild to see where current TV shows have people living - e.g folks with normal jobs living in multi-million dollar houses in San Francisco, etc.

All the TV I watch is pretty much mindless and relaxing! At least, that’s why I enjoy it. Real Housewives of NYC and OC, Antiques Roadshow, House Hunters International, Seinfeld and The Office reruns, the Dog Whisperer and cooking shows (D’s and I like the ones where they design the outlandish, giant cakes). Used to enjoy Queer Eye for the Straight Guy just to see the house and apartment makeovers.

Don’t watch daytime tv, but used to like Martha Stewart’s old show, where she did neat and/or sensible projects. The new studio-based show seems just like all the rest.

All-time-favorite “comfort show” in our family is… Arthur, on PBS. Have no idea why, but even the kids admit it’s soothing, nostalgic, etc.

Oh- and This Old House, and the Rick Steves travel show.

Top Chef, Chopped, Next Food Network Star. Hey, it’s comforting and educational :-)

Am I the only one who finds comfort in watching those movies on Lifetime? If I feel bad enought to just lay on the sofa I can always watch one of those.
Older shows would include I love Lucy, Leave it to Beaver, and Cosby.

Well, I have lots of time these days for sitting on the sofa staring at TV, so I’m afraid I have a rather long, and not particularly selective, list:

Antiques Roadshow

Pretty much anything on TCM (except Westerns)

Law and Order, any version (there’s almost guaranteed to be one on somewhere, almost any time of day)

Top Chef (I even watched a couple of Top Chef Masters episodes while in the hospital last week, for as long as I could stand looking at all that food)

Real Housewives, various versions

Project Runway when it’s on

Seinfeld, even though I think I’ve seen every episode at least a couple of times

Watching the Yankees play (I think I’ve watched more baseball on TV in the last 10 days than in the last couple of years put together)

Some of those shows on the Discovery Network about people dropped into the wilderness who slog their way back to civilization through the ice and snow.

Animal Planet, so long as it isn’t about sick pets

In terms of older shows, I still sometimes stop to watch some of the shows that were already in reruns when I was a child, but that I used to watch religiously after school or when I was home sick. I Love Lucy (my favorite show, probably, when I was young), The Honeymooners (WPIX in New York showed reruns daily for about 35 years, but I don’t think they’re on regularly anymore), The Dick Van Dyke Show, Leave it to Beaver, even Father Knows Best. Watching All in the Family and Maude, as great as they were, just makes me feel ancient, for some reason.

The Golden Girls still cracks me up, I have no idea why. Something cozy about those women all living together like that.

The weird thing about comfort TV shows is that the ones I like couldn’t be further away from my own life, and I like it that way.

Another Food Network and HGTV watcher. I watch little TV and will switch off between the two channels. The only show I watched on a weekly basis was The Amazing Race.
I would like to watch the Next Food Network Star but I keep forgetting to turn it on.

I always think HGTV is good laundry-folding TV…I can turn it on while I’m folding laundry but there is no plot to get involved in, so I can walk away from it easily.

Has to be all those Food Paradise shows (pizza, hot dogs, etc). Such a guilty pleasure, at least I can watch now that I have to cut back on consumption!

And those other food shows like “Extreme Fast Food” I guess any food show that is “bad” for you :)

Ask anyone who knows me, it’s I Love Lucy hands down! I could sit for hours and watch and never tire. Ever. Pure comfort. And I love the characters on Friends as well. I watch every night before bed. Get a good laugh in and occasionally I weep a bit too.

1ofeach - LOVE House Hunters and House Hunters International. I love being a “lookie loo” all around the country (and world) from my couch.

Depending on my mood, I usually go with sappy movies on Lifetime or Law and Order. As said earlier, you can always find a Law and Order on some station any time, day or night. If it is a weekend where my husband is working, you might find me watching Disney or ABC Family. I know the shows aren’t great, but for some reason I enjoy watching the children actors.

am enjoying usa’s royal pains…what a cute comforting show!

Keeping up Appearances -even though I probably have every episode memorized.
Trading Spouses and Nanny 911-don’t ask.
Kitchen Nightmares with Gordon Ramsey.

Bizarre Foods on Travel starring Andrew Zimmern and his castiron stomach :)

I can’t believe no one has mentioned The Dog Whisperer yet!

Other than that, top of my list would be I Love Lucy, ER, MASH, Mary Tyler Moore and The Cake Boss.

Foodnetwork…my favs are Giadda and the Neely’s as well as Barefoot Contessa. Not always for the appeal of their personalities but the food they prepare.
Also. anxiously waiting for Madmen…
Follow Big Love on HBO, Real Housewives of NJ…other than that , only news

Oh, how could I forget Real Housewives of NJ? I got hooked on it this year.
DH sometimes watches it with me but would never admit it.
We are both HGTV junkies…watching House Hunters right now:)
