Comfort TV, 'fess up here

Building on the guilty pleasures thread, we’ve found in our household the adults have certain TV shows with comfort value. For me, it’s I Love Lucy, Judge Judy & those uppity English nanny shows. For DH it’s Twilight Zone, crime-TV and any movie that’s well-rated on “Rotten Tomatoes” and free on cable – regardless of genre.

almost anything playing on TCM

I could watch Leave it to Beaver all day. I also love The Dick Van Dyke Show, I Love Lucy – basically anything on in reruns when I got home from school.

I’m addicted to House Hunters!

I’m with musicamusica - most movies on TCM. I like the old movies. I also watch old Alfred Hitchcock TV shows on hulu.com.

But I also need to go along with your H and add Twilight Zone as well but I only really need to watch the first few seconds and the entire episode pops into my head and then I don’t really need to watch the rest of it. I also like that show that seemed to humorously capture so many of the daily scenarios we find ourselves in - Seinfeld. Aside from that I like the ‘Build it Bigger’, Modern Marvels’, etc. types of shows on Discovery, NatGeo, etc.

Another TCM junkie here. I feel such a sense of solace when a Cary Grant movie is on, or William Powell or Claudette Colbert or Jean Arthur or any of those folks. Those were the days. So what’s been up with TCM lately? I don’t like those Rusty movies on Saturday mornings, or the lame Westerns, either - let AMC show 'em. But showcasing the great movies of 1939 - there’s a great idea!

OT - back in 1939, people didn’t appreciate that they were living through Hollywood’s Golden Year. A New Yorker review of “The Wizard of Oz” called it a “stinkaroo” - and I couldn’t make that up if I tried!

I’ll watch almost any sitcom from the 70’s, but my favorite will always be Mary Tyler Moore. I love the gang in the newsroom.

Endless repeats of HGTV shows around here. Odd since I hate remodeling and decorating.

HGTV (especially House Hunters), followed by the FOOD NETWORK. H says I need a limited channels tv. Usually have a book to read while watching.

MAS*H. Never get sick of it. Laugh even though I can recite the dialogue with the actors.

Mission: Impossible (the series, not the awful Tom Cruise movies). The DVD sets are wonderful!

I’d echo the 70s sitcoms, although occasionally find myself watching Jeannie or Bewitched (talk about comfort!). Loved MTM but I gotta say the original Bob Newhart Show (well–at least until they moved into the new apt) was freakin’ fantastic. And I’m going to hold my head up high and say I can’t wait til thirtysomething is released in August. My favorite show when it originally aired.

My number one comfort show is the Andy Griffith Show (but it has to be an oldie with Don Knotts). For me, and also my husband, it’s a mix of nostalgia with a heavy dose of down home humor. I can also get hooked on a marathon of That 70’s Show. I love most of the old shows from the 60s and many from the early 70s. Seinfeld is always funny too, but for comfort TV, give me and afternoon with Andy, Barney, Opie, Aunt Bee, Floyd…and I’m blissfully happy.

P.S. to coronax’s post–I firmly believe you can learn all you need to know about parenting from Andy. And agree if it’s a color episode I turn it off.

Another House Hunters addict here, although I’ll also watch just about anything else on HGTV at night. I’m also a huge fan of the older sitcoms…I Love Lucy, Bewitched, Leave It To Beaver, Mary Tyler Moore, Bob Newhart. However, I’m not a fan of Andy Griffith; Barney was just too goofy for me.

How did we live before HGTV? Even DH watches it.
Also like all the old shows too. Andy Griffith is always a fav. even though we seen every episode dozens of times. We live in NC. My Dad was the Sheriff in a rural NC county when I was growing up. Andy Griffith always feels like a slice of home to us.

Cheers - any episode. I watched part of the Thanksgiving food fight the other day on YouTube and it is still hysterical.

How about the the Antique Roadshow. My kids love watching the Travel Channels shows on food. They had a marathon on over the weekend on Food Paradise. Also, love Anthony Bourdain and Andrew Zimmern. We also watch as a family some terrible reality shows like Rock of Love and Daisy in Love. Both of these shows are absolute trainwrecks.

I love to watch old Hithcock films and will always watch a great war movie like Dirty Dozen or the Great Escape. The Thin Man series also are a big hit in our household.

I’m with MADad on MASH - we just finished watching all 11 seasons on DVD. What a great show!

I expected it to have aged badly, but it really hasn’t - even Hawkeye’s casual womanizing works - and he gets his comeuppance once or twice on just that score.

house hunters, house hunters international, american idol, and america’s got talent. you can just feel comfort oozing from the hoff. nick cannon is pretty good too. he’s funny.

i like the flip shows on saturday mornings too…the one from connecticut (with all the guys) is pretty good and i like the one from la too…with Rudy.

any bourne movie or tom clancy movie

Redondo Dave - LOL, we watch Antiques Roadshow every week… “What? This dishtowel is work $250,000? Oh, my! Well, I’d never sell it…”

Love What Not to Wear (even DH knows what an Empire waist is), Dog Whisperer, and I could NEVER turn off an episode of the Brady Bunch!
