Okay, I know they’re ugly. But I promised my husband I’d get him a recliner for his birthday – the kind you can be slothful and fall asleep in during football games. I tried to do some research on the internet, but it seemed like every brand had lots of complaints. The obvious choice would be a La-z-boy, but after reading a couple of reviews calling them “disposable” that didn’t seem a like a good choice. I’d really like one where the mechanism that reclines would last at least a few years, and a couple of kids flopping down on it hard won’t ruin the cushions. I know the wise parents here have probably grappled with this major life decision already, and welcome any and all advice.

I love our recliner. Basically you get what you pay for. Spend as much as you can and research. Can’t remember the brand that ours is, as we have had it for a decade and the tags are gone. LOL

Momof3, get him a Stressless. They cost a lot of $$$, but they are the most comfortable things on the planet (no, I do not own one, because I cannot afford one, but I go to furniture stores just to sit in one :))

LOL BunsenBurner. =)

We bought a lazy-boy for our rec room. It was in a combination of leather & faux (love that term) leather. It’s the kind that looks a little like the Stressless ones. It held up really well and is now the favorite piece of furniture for the second year in daughter’s common room. I know it used pretty hard.

Now if I had the $$$$…

momof3, you can have my husband’s recliner…for FREE!

Have had a La Z Boy for 6+ years…very happy with it. Did NOT want one of the poofy, leather ones…got a very nice fabric cover on one with wood arms. Purposely picked one smaller than many recliners, but its still very comfortable.

If you go to their website, you can pick a style…and then look at it with different fabrics/patterns (I see they now have ones that are much more chair-like and less recliner-like!)

We recently went through this - H wanted a new one to replace the (literally) falling apart old friend.

The one who will be doing the sitting must “test drive” the chair. I’m 5’8" and find his new one too big. He loves it like a second bed. From Ethan Allen (no longer just traditional furniture). I’ll tell you in 10 years if the price meant it lasted longer…

We have an Eames Lounge chair. Not exactly a recliner, but it’s beautiful and does the trick. They can be pricey, but they are well made. We bought ours fifteen years ago, us it a little TOO MUCH. It is still like new.

I agree with BunsenBurner. I had the pleasure of sitting in a Stressless recliner in a store recently. What I loved was that the seat is not as deep as the Laz z boy. Not to mention the butter soft leather. I could not believe how wonderful it felt. The couch was also dreamy.
With that said my H has a leather Laz z boy. It is big and ugly. I don’t even find it comfortable. H and the kids enjoy it. I only allowed it in the house since they agreed to put it in a room I don’t have to go in.
When my Mom was sick she had one of those huge chairs that mechanically stand you up that you buy from the medical supply store. My youngest D and my nieces and nephews loved Grandma’s chair. They would climb all over my Mom even when she was at her sickest. When my Mom died all the young grandchildren wanted Grandma’s chair. Boy was that chair ugly. But it sure gives me some great memories.

When my son went to medical school, he said he house must have two things, a recliner and a big screen tv; he bought himself both!! His living room is long and narrow and is packed with oversize furniture. He wanted comfortable furniture that he and his friends could lounge all over.

This is the recliner he bought; it is like a chair and a half so there is room for for two friends that are very friendly!!

Went to the La-Z-Boy and Stressless stores today – ended up ordering a Stressless Mayfair. Much nicer looking and very comfy – although it costs twice as much as the La-Z-Boy. It’s a lot to spend for a chair, but we don’t buy furniture very often and we decided it was for both of our birthdays and our anniversary so that we wouldn’t feel as guilty. And hopefully, it will last for years. Thanks for the advice!

Stressless. Simple engineering design but durable and comfortable.
We have 3 (pre 1980) all bought when we had disposable income and before we had DS and caring for parents.

{Also comfortable enough for you to sleep in when you need to sleep alone.} ;)

Never heard of the Stressless brand. We currently have 5 LaZBoys. There’s my first purchase some 25 plus years ago that isn’t the chaise lounger type, 2 older ones with patches I put where the feet meet the footrest and last year’s his and hers in the family room (we’re getting ready for retirement) purchases with the soft fabric my H wanted. Durability is partly dependent on the fabric chosen. Leather is cold in this weather in our climate. I found that there are also many different sizes of seats, backs as well as heights and widths. Nothing like falling asleep in the “comfy chair” with your feet up. The chaise style is necessary for the small dog to be with you as well.

My little dog sits with me in our La-Z-Boy leather recliner too. I don’t usually recline it. We just sit side by side with a quilt over us every AM to read the paper and drink coffee. My German shepherd likes to sit in that chair too, by herself. Everyone has to vacate when my H wants to sit there–his chair.
