Coming from below top 20 schools (Ph.D in chemistry)

<p>I have a question about graduate school program. I am currently in a process of applying for a graduate school…
I will be applying for Ph.D in chemistry… however, I do not believe that I have strong chance of getting into top 20 schools…
For this reason, I want to apply for Ph.D program for two schools that have current ranking of 40 and 50…
If I graduate from either one of those schools… Is it still possible to get a job later on? like industry job?.. I am not planning to get MS because I heard that getting MS from state college doesn’t help much…

<p>Possible? Yes? Guaranteed? No. Likely? Who knows? Son of a friend got his PhD in chemistry from Berkeley in the mid-90s and has never been able to find a job in his field.</p>
