Hey guys! i got admitted to berkeley as an eap (exchange) student for Fall 2008. i’m really looking forward to going there! i just completed my housing preferences (unit 3, unit 1, unit 2 and then wada…) and fingers are crossed that i’ll get in!

i just had a couple of questions, that hopefully someone can answer for me? i’m planning on taking me102, ieor140 (or me101), e45 (or e5) and me132. would this be a difficult load? i was doing some research on me102 and it said that i would need a workshop certificate - how difficult is this to obtain? i tried emailing the lecturer, but he didn’t reply…i still can’t enrol in courses atm…trying to sort that out asap…

i’m really looking forward to coming to berkeley! i’d love get involved in all the sports and stuff! i’d also love any other general advice from anyone!

is this for fall schedule? i haven’t taken ieor140, but i have heard that it is a ton of work. labs are friday, 2-5pm which kills it for me. however, most people say that it is a great class - only after it’s over - and that they learn a ton and that the grading is very fair.

i’m assuming this means that you need to be trained for the ME student machine shop. if so, it is not difficult - about 3(i think) hands-on training classes (~1 hour each, if i recall correctly) in which the two guys that run the shop teach you the basics to each tool and go over important safety requirements and shop procedures.

oh ok…so for the workshop certificate i don’t need to enrol in a separate course…thats good…

i heard the same about ieor140 - i can either take that or me101. i’m hoping i can study up on java programming before i leave australia so i can enrol in ieor140 but if not i’ll do me101…the professor for ieor140 roger glassey (i think)…seems really nice…

actually…i had another question…how difficult is it to open a bank account in america? i’d be thinking of opening a checking account…or maybe just a savings account? i’m not really sure…which bank do most college students use? i know some colleges have banks on campus but i’m not sure about berkeley?

Berkeley has a credit union on campus and Bank of America right across the street. I know I need a Social Security # when I open accounts, but there must be other identifiers for foreign nationals who wish to hold accounts in the states. You can probably check the requirements online before you arrive.
