Coming to NYC on Thursday...how am I supposed to get from Midtown to Flushing?

I’m not rich. Unlike a lot of people here, I don’t have the luxury of throwing away 79 dollars, especially when **I am scheduled to shoot two weddings/b. I have to make money to pay my rent too.

I’m not some sort of preppy WASPy voluntourist, if that’s what you’re implying. I’m Asian. Flushing is like a second home.

I’m here to see some of my best friends in college, who graduated without me because I was ill, and have been terribly depressed (suicidal even) since seeing them leave. And I’m here to also work and develop my passion, and at the same time earn some income to make ends meet.

Evitaperon, don’t let the responses get to you. For what it’s worth, I thought a lot of responses were really rude and focused on their own problems, rather than on what you asked. It’s not you - don’t let it upset you.

Good luck to you, evita. I hope you are safe, make lots of money and have a wonderful time visiting your dear friends.

And what acollegestudent said.

Evita, have a good trip. When you are traveling into an area that was recently affected by a hurricane the most important thing you need to bring with you is some patience. The typical travel times you are used to will take longer than usual, so make sure you give yourself plenty of time to get there.

I’m assuming you are in close contact with the friends you are visiting and they will be able to tell you what condition the area is in so you can plan accordingly.

Although I no longer live in LA, my family still does, and when Isaac hit earlier this year my father had very significant damage to his roof. He lives alone so as soon as the storm passed I got in the car and went into the affected area. It took about 10 hours to make what is normally a 4 hour drive, but when I did get there and was able to visit and help him it was worth it to me so I understand that your trip is important to you for your reasons.

WASPy preppy voluntourist…nice EP, nice. I don’t see here where anyone suggested anyone was headed in as anything but on personal interests. The quote you pulled simply reflects that having extra people to worry about in zones where travel is difficult and electricity is still out can add extra burden. You of all people should understand and have empathy that when people are in very stressful situations their writing styles and posts reflect this. If you’ve forgotten, go back an read your own when you’ve been under pressure. You have been afforded much grace on this board and it’s nice to do it for others when they are in difficult situations.

Make the trip if you wish. Know that your bus ticket is very likely refundable like airline, hotel, and show tickets are right now. I believe this has far more to do with you needing to emotionally connect with people who have left school a year prior to you. You have had a very difficult time with the transition of being there without them. I hope the trip is safe and relatively without hassle for you, and that you thoroughly enjoy your time there with old friends. I believe someone suggested this, but you might want to ask them if there’s anything you can bring in case they are having a hard time finding something.

Are both weddings still on or might they have been cancelled and rescheduled?

Wonder if he (evita’s a he) is already in NY? evita, you were supposed to travel by bus on Thursday. So, are you already in NY, staying with your relatives in Flushing or your friends in Astoria? Hope you have a good visit with your friends if you did make it there.

Evita, you should check with the brides to make sure the weddings are all still as scheduled. Good luck, be safe, and make lots of money.

Situation here is really terrible. This is what the Manhatttan BP said today

"Manhattah Borough Preisdent Scott Stringer voiced his opinion on Friday, saying that the city needs to recognize the suffering following “a tragedy of historic proportions.”

“New Yorkers in Staten Island, the Rockaways, Coney Island and Lower Manhattan are struggling to keep body and soul together, deprived of basic essentials as temperatures drop,” Stringer said."

Zoos, I just got word that a gf’s mom who lives on SI (Wyman Ave, just down the block from the bakery) had her home entirely destroyed. Luckily her mom evacuated and was not there, but the devastation is heartbreaking.

This is touching

blueiguana, my D’s boyfriend is saying that there are more bodies that haven’t been recovered or counted yet.

E/P’s a male?

And, it turns out, SteveMA is a female?

evitaperon,
"I’m not rich. Unlike a lot of people here, I don’t have the luxury of throwing away 79 dollars, especially when I am scheduled to shoot two weddings (which means hundreds of dollars more in income). I have to make money to pay my rent too. "
-You are really talking to the wrong crowd in regard to expanses. Most here are dipping into savings / retirement funds to pay tuitions, you really have no idea whatsoever. Do you pay for somebody’s education?
Being aggravated is one thing, insulting others who are trying to help is another. Keep your lid on, it is nobody’s fault, how about families in NYC with kids who have to go to work every day? C’mon, how much these families loose in ton of additional time and money to get where they have to get on a daily basis?

I don’t think evitaperon is being insulting. I think adults here are kind of out of line here. If you don’t have something constructive to offer to help OP then don’t say anything, he/she is just trying to get to where he/she is going, there is no need for any lecture. If someone asks me on the street what is the best way to get Queen, I am not going to give that person a lecture about why he should or should not go.

^post # 121 was almost attacking to say it mildly.

This is understandably really important to him. I just want him to be safe. Parts of Queens aren’t in great shape either and it is possible that the weddings’ plans may have needed to be adjusted.

OP was just trying to defend himself after being called many things on this post. He is correct, $79 wouldn’t mean that much to most of us, but to a young person it is a lot of money.

Miamidap - you go on many vacations (cruise), which I don’t think OP could necessary afford to do for quite some time.

Yes it is a bit of money Oldfort. But it was likely refundable if need be. I’m sure Evita Peron made sure he has the current schedule of the weddings and won’t need to come back again next week!
