Commencement ceremonies & finals disrupted by fires

North San Diego County: DS was 10 minutes into a final exam at his U when they were evacuated due to the very nearby brush fire. Finals are cancelled through the end of the week, and DS’s commencement ceremonies will not happen this weekend. So far, I haven’t heard of casualties, but quite a few houses and condos/apartments have been lost. This is very scary this early, we don’t usually see this kind of fire danger until October!

And we are wondering what they will do about the finals, and the commencement. I guess they are figuring that out now. So far, nothing has burned on the campus.

I think they have to wait until the heat and winds die down over the weekend.
My colleague also was supposed to graduate this Friday. Canceled.

OMG, I was mostly following the international news this week and just skimmed the headlines about the fires. Fingers crossed for cooler weather and more favorable fire fighting conditions.

I’m sorry to hear that, sopranomom92. One year when I was in college, we had bad flooding. They cancelled finals and everyone got the grade they had going into finals. I don’t remember how they handled commencement ceremonies.

All the cancelled commencement ceremonies are rescheduled for this weekend. We are thrilled that we will all watch our son “walk” tomorrow morning. His finals that were missed were taken on line instead of in person, and the one that was interrupted turned into an extra on line assignment. All is well!

Congratulations to all of you - enjoy the day! So glad the situation worked out quickly.
