Womens participation in the Renaissance
The Renaissance was a time period of rebirth of classical works from the 1400-1550. Many important figures participated in the Renaissance mostly men, Niccolai Machiavelli, Leonardo Da Vinci and many others. Women also participated in the Renaissance, such as Isabella De Este and Jane Seymor. However, women participated in the Renaissance to a minor extent. Women participated in the Renaissance socially by maintain the household, politically by giving heir and ruling a country and religiously by serving god.
Women aided in the Renaissance socially by maintaining the household. Some of the men worked as merchants in Italy, the birthplace of the Renaissance. When the merchants went off to trade, it would usually take about two months. As a result, the person who covered for the husbands missing place was the women. She would educate the children. If the child was a boy, the mom would send him to school, if they had enough money, and tried to make him a successful person, the Renaissance man. If the child was a girl, the mom would try to train her to grow up as a good wife, and try to find a good match for her daughter.
Women participated in the Renaissance politically by giving heir and on certain occasion being a monarch. One of the main roles of women in the Renaissance was to give heir. For example, Henry VIII, the king of England, wanted a son to continue his throne. However, his wife gave birth to a daughter. As a result, he divorced his wife and married another wife, but the next wife gave birth to a daughter also. Henry VIII did this until he had six wives. Finally, Jane Serymor gave birth to Edward, but because of Edwards weak health. He did not live long enough to continue his fathers throne. In result, his daughter Mary I took his throne. Without Mary I, Henry VIII dynasty would have ended, but because of his many heirs he could continue on his family until Queen Elizabeth. Also, wife of kings took the place of monarch when the king was gone. For example, Isabella De Este was the wife of Francesco II, king of Mantua. She served as the regent of Mantua during the absence of her husband.
Finally, women participated in the Renaissance religiously by serving god. Women served as nun in churches. The women would vow to the church and discipline themselves to become a nun. The nuns helped cure the sick, make food, copy books, and educate people. Since they did not have a family, they devoted their spare time praying. They did not have a specific job. They would go out and help the food, and educate them about Catholicism.
Women did not have an important role during the Renaissance. Most of the women were believed to just cook and take care of the household. Also, since many people believed that women were evil, because they were the daughter of Eve. Many of them got accused as witches, which lead to execution. In conclusion, woman did not have a significant role in the Renaissance.
