Common app activity question

Im applying early action an i know that i cant change the information for rd once ive sent it in. With that said, i was just welcomed as a volunteer at my local hospital in order to get service hours for school. Since i have not done any hours yet, should i write this on the colmmon app? I have no idea how many hours a week i will be granted yet either which makes this situation even more difficult. Any advice ? Any will be appreciated. Thanks

Bumppppppp

I would not include it. If it turns out to be a meaningful activity you can send the school(s) an update once you’ve been doing it for a while.

i wouldn’t put it on the extracurriculars page since they want to know which activities are most important to you. if you decide to upload a resume in the additional information part then put it there

The thing is, this place is somewhere that im going to be doing around 100+ hours in the next few months. Does that change your answer at all?

Bumppppppppp

perhaps bundle this activity with other volunteer ones and listing it under “Details and Accomplishments” line?

Doesn’t change my answer. If you haven’t done it yet you can’t list it as a current activity. I can tell you’re eager to have this activity on your application. The only way you could honestly include it now would be to list it as “X Activity, starting (date), anticipated hours”. Frankly, I’m not sure it’s worth it. Despite what you’ll hear here there is no requirement that applicants to schools have community service hours. What admissions folks want to see is a track record of meaningful activities, whether those be paid work, volunteering, sports, music, clubs or any other extracurriculars.

Your new volunteer job might alternatively be put in the “additional information” area. You could explain that as of this date you have not yet begun volunteering but that you have made a major commitment to future hours at the hospital. Again, I’m not sure it’s worth it, but it’s up to you.

But by the time regualr decision deadlines come around it should be on my app no? Ea i would understand not to put it on but why not put it on rd if thats possible?

Right, after you’ve begun the activity it’s legit. Updating the schools also gives you an opportunity to reiterate your interest. :)

Hmm, then I have a question about something related to this…

Here’s my situation:

I fully intend on joining my school’s weightlifting team in Q3. I made an activity under “Other Club/Activities” and listed that as a “Position held”, but stressed that I will join it later. Under “Details and Accomplishments”, I put that I eat healthy and exercise regularly (gym, home w/ calisthenics; ~3 hrs/wk).

I know my question strays off a bit, but first: Is this even a valid “extra curricular”? I do commit a lot of time into it!
And second: Is this an appropriate way to inform them that I plan on joining the weightlifting team? I have taken a weights class in previous years, and they should see that on my transcript.
