Hey guys, when I was looking over the common app essay prompts for number 4 I saw that it said “what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution.” Does this mean that for this essay the readers expect for you to come up with or at least have a blueprint for the problem that you are trying to solve. Because as both a Greek and American citizen I wanted to write my essay about the current economic crises in Greece but I highly doubt that college admissions officials would expect a high schooler to be able to come up with an in depth procedure for fixing that issue considering how thousands of the best minds in Europe are currently working on that issue and have been unable to solve it. So what do you think.
If you aren’t a strong writer and aren’t good at conveying what you want to say; this can be quite a difficult task at hand for you. However, I say go for it! Colleges know you won’t be the next noble peace prize recipient; they know that whatever issue you pick isn’t honestly going to solved the crisis in one essay. Essentially, they’re testing you on whether or not you have a clear position on the topic and can defend your argument.
I’d strongly advise against it. The Greek debt crisis involves complex financial arrangements neither you nor I are privy to. 650 words is absolutely not enough space to address this issue, even if you did have the requisite knowledge.
