<p>How much longer than 500 words can the essay conceivably be? Mine is around 900 right now, but there is no way I can shorten it by much more than 100 words without it losing a lot of its luster. It is the evaluation of a significant experience, thus the reason for having so much to say. I’m applying ED to Penn.</p>

<p>I agree with accordingtone. Whenever they give a range, they expect you to keep your essay within the limits given. Be more direct;straight-forward.</p>
<p>you might be surprised about how much you can shorten it; mine was 1000 and I thought I couldn’t shorten it at all. With my dad’s help, I got it down to 600 and it’s actually much more effective.</p>
<p>You can be slightly over, but not by that much.</p>
