Common App essay on braces

Is an essay on braces an overused topic for college admission?

I wouldn’t call it overused, just a little immature. If you think about it, braces kind of represent the pinnacle of adolescence and although they might spur the occasional nasty side comment, unless they have really profoundly affected you, don’t write about them. If the greatest thing to effect you in your life thus far has been braces, college essay readers might think that you lack any sort of real life experiences.

it’s just I’ve had a unique experience with my braces. I’ve had them for six years and have grown quite attached to them. so my essays would be about how they’ve been with me all through out middle and high school, and how i some sort of bond with my braces.

What does that say about you? I think this could be an interesting topic if written well (as is usually the case), but I can’t tell from your posts how this will reveal anything about you.

would you want to read the first paragraph? I can PM it to you and can critique it :)

I’m sorry if I sounded harsh. I can see how it effects a person it would just require specific examples. You can even write it like a vignette, where you discuss several moments throughout those 6 years of braces (maybe when you first got them, then sometime in the middle, and when you took them off…?) and how each has somehow shaped you. Or you can parallel your growth in maturity to your experiences while having braces.

I can read the first paragraph if you want any feedback.
