One important key to success is self-confidence. An important step to self-confidence is preparation
Shyness limits ones abilities and talents. Since an early age, I have been overcome by the fear of public speaking. During the start of my junior year, I decided to change this by auditioning in the Drama category for the Oratory Club.
On the day of the club registration, I was filled with mixed emotions and nervousness. As I spoke to the Moderator of the club, she informed me of the rules and regulations as a team member. This enabled me to comprehend the seriousness, dedication and determination that an orator had to have to compete. I knew then, this was no easy task. She also informed us that at the end of the second semester, we would participate in a school-wide competition. I was anxious but it did not stop there for only thirteen people were to be selected, and there were only two spaces opened for the Drama category.
The night before the auditions, I was walking around my entire house to rid my nervousness. I think I lost five pounds that night! Even presenting in front of my mother terrified me. What would my presentation be like?
The next day, students presented excellent auditions which heighten my fears. The moderator then called my name; I stood up and faced the judges and other competitors, however, I delivered my presentation. Now, the decision was in the judges hands.
Why does a shy person participate in an oratory club? I have no idea. The only thing I know is that we practiced and worked with determination, enthusiasm and dedication. Not only, did the club empower my oratory skills but enabled me to develop close relationships with the other members. We are a band of brothers.
Finally after months of practicing, it was the day of the competition. Many members from different schools practiced their presentations with enthusiasm and the goal to win. There was a lot of pressure but that did not stop me. As I heard my name called, I was trembling with emotion, but I stood up, and deliver my drama piece.
While the competitors, parents, family and friends were waiting for the results, we had the opportunity to make new friends, eat, and just have a good time relaxing. After waiting for the judges decision, we anxiously heard the names of the winners. Unfortunately, my name was not called that night but I look forward to compete in other Oratory competitions.
This experience allowed me to comprehend the value of self-confidence, and true friendship. I know I did a good job and gave my max, but others did also. Now in my senior year, I have the opportunity to be the clubs president and received a school medal for recognition of my work, commitment and perseverance. This experience involved much sacrifice but the reward has been the gaining of self-confidence, assurance and the ability to demonstrate the capacity to overcome future challenges.
