I’m probably going to choose “Discuss some issue of personal, local, national, or international concern and its importance to you.” for the Common App essay question. I want to write about Diabetes in America, especially since I am a Type 1 Diabetic. I’ll look at the problem as a whole, then give my input as a Diabetic looking at the issue. I’m going to try not to sound too resentful when considering Type 2 Diabetes. Many Type 1 diabetics are frustrated that people only know about type 2 and often think it is the same as Type 1, since Type 1 is not preventable and Type 2 is caused by overeating. My question is, should I write about this? I know you’re supposed to stay away from the three D’s (Death, Disease, Divorce) in college applications.

I never heard about the 3 Ds, but “rules” are meant to be broken. I think one could write a good essay on death or disease, and maybe even divorce. If that’s the prevailing myth out there, you will have a unique essay.

Well, in my English class we did a college project, where we went over the basic college application process. Our teacher gave us something to read that said not to mention that in our essays, and that many people choose to write about those things. It said they are common essay topics that college application officers see all the time. I think when they say disease though, they mean don’t write a sappy story about overcoming an illness.

Well if your topic shows something about you to the admissions officers then I think it would be fine to write about it. Just make sure you tie it in with its impact on you or its significance in your life. Don’t just talk about the subject.

Well I want to talk about how America is only now becoming concerned with Diabetes because its tied in with obesity. There are Diabetes centers popping up everywhere for those with Type 2 Diabetes that have mainly gotten it by eating too much and exercising too little. The number of people concerned with obese people getting the preventable disease are way higher than those concerned with children getting an unpreventable and incurable disease. Type 2 Diabetes can actually be cured by getting gastric bypass surgery. Because of this, there is a huge amount of ignorance about Type 1 Diabetes. When I tell people that I’m Diabetic they say “But you’re not fat”, “So you can’t eat sugar?”, and " My uncle got that a couple years ago". I’ve only had Diabetes for 3 years now, imagine how those who have had it their entire lives feel regarding type 2.
I think it could be an interesting essay topic. I don’t particularly like writing about how an experience has changed me for the better. It just seems too cheesy and overdone.

Only choose this topic if you can give insight into who you are.
