I wrote a quick common app essay about my favorite character in a book, who happens to also be an evil villain. Yes/No? Will the adcoms think I am ultra-emo or something?

i say yes, why not write about the villain, if you feel he/she has influenced you (not too negatively, i hope). i don’t think the adcoms will think/care about whether or not you’re emo…

No they will not.

They will not think you are emo. They will think you’re interesting. Just make sure to justify good reasons that you like a villain.

(But I usually agree. Villains are often far more emotionally complex or intriguing than heroes…which villain is it?)

Thanks, that makes me feel better. By the way, I’m re-reading my original post and it sounds like I’m saying emo is bad-I actually meant more along the lines of “do you think they’ll think I’m a psycho killer” and just didn’t get the right word.
Whirlybird, I totally agree- long live the villains! The one I talk about in the essay is Christopher Carrion, from Abarat by Clive Barker (most people haven’t heard of it, so don’t worry if you have no clue what I am talking about ;)

Haha, wow. I LOVE Christopher Carrion! I know most people have on idea about Abarat, but I thought it was amazing… He’s so intense. I can totally see a fantastic essay written about him.

Nope, not a psycho killer either.
