So, I will try to phrase this question in a way that won’t give away too much of what I want my essay to be about.
You may be familiar with the first Common App question for this year, but if you aren’t I will paste it below:
Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.
My question is… for this prompt could I write about my interest in a particular city due to a certain event? Or is that stretching the “interest” part too far…
Well, if the event connects to an issue that you’re passionate about, then that’s a legitimate topic. Or if the event connects to your background in some way, or another interest / hobby. Or even if you’ve been to the city a lot, and have learned a lot in your time there, or something.
I think if you hinting at going to tour the college for the first time and how much you fell in love with it and the location and just everything about it. No.
That just kind of sounds like what you are getting at.
I think it’s legitimate to talk about how you attend the Boston Marathon every year and fell in love with Boston. Or the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona and fell in love with Pamplona. Or Mardi Gras in New Orleans and now love New Orleans
If you now love the city, and envision yourself living there, it could make for a powerful essay.
But a couple of words of warning: you want this essay to be about YOU, not Mardi Gras or the Marathon, or the city itself. You want to express some of who you are. So don’t go on and on about the event or the city; rather, concentrate on the connection YOU made with the city.
