common app essays

can i send different essays to different schools?
also , how important is it to stay within the allotted word count

btw, can i send different recs to different schools as well, and does the guidance counselor letter count as a common app rec?

I’m not sure if I can answer you’re questions, but here’s what I’ve got:
You can send different recs to different schools, but I’m not sure why you’d want to. It could mean unnecessary work for you.
You need your guidance counselor rec + two teacher recs for most colleges, including ones applied to using the common app.

As to the word count: try. A couple words over the limit isn’t going to break your application. A boring, 800 word essay might, though.

Are you asking whether you can send different essays to multiple schools using the common app., not meaning supplemental essays specific to colleges? I don’t know. It might be in your best interest, however, to just write a couple very strong essays rather than trying to cater to different schools with a bunch of different essays. A couple of the colleges may have different essay topics entirely, in which case, writing different essays makes sense, obviously.

I believe you can submit different essays to different schools. What you have to do is submit the application separately for each different essay. For example if you are applying to schools A,B, and C and want a different essay for each, you should initially list only school A as a school to which you are applying on the commonapp website. Submit the app with that essay, then replace the essay with the one for school B, put school B on your list of places to apply and submit again. Repeat for school C. I think that should work. I hope it wasn’t too confusing.
