Hi I’m an international students. My counsellor sent a letter to my EA college with its name on the letter but now he cannot edit it or submit for the RD colleges. What must we do?
This is his first time so he didn’t know one cannot change the letter for each college.
Unfortunately I don’t believe it can be changed.
My understanding is if the recommendation was already uploaded, it’s been sent to all the schools you’ve applied to.
You can email the adcoms and explain the goof. Unless it’s super specific to the one EA school, it should be ok. I would imagine that your recommender isn’t the first to do this.
I guess a counselor could misunderstand (especially if English isn’t the first language) but the counselor documentation tells you multiple times that you CANNOT customize the letter for each college. When you upload the letter, it makes you check a box saying you understand you will not be able to change the letter and verifying that the letter isn’t customized for a specific college.
I know that doesn’t help this poster at this point, though.
Would it be better for the counselor (rather than the student) to email the adcoms, and maybe attach a copy of the generic recommendation letter to his email?
I think this is a good idea…because usually students here don’t get to see the counselor recommendation!
Honestly, I wouldn’t worry. They all know you apply to more than one school.
Counselors and teachers commonly make this mistake. It’s no big deal. It will be ok and not impact your app.
With that said, Your counselor could update their letter and send to your AO at each school you applied to, but it’s not necessary. Good luck.
If the counselor has made a mistake in the submissions process of the recommendation letter, he/she can rewrite it and send it as an optional report.
