Common App LOR Process

Hello  My son just completed a neuroscience camp and the head of the program very generously offered to write him a LOR. His other two references will go through Naviance because they are teachers at his school and It’s my understanding that an outside LOR will come through Common App. So my question is about sequence. Does he first set up his common app, then enter the professors email and the software will then automate a request directly? Or, does the professor forward it to someone else (ie guidance counselor) and enters it another way? He’s writing his professor back who’s asked where and how he should submit his letter, and we want to answer this question clearly. (Apologies if this is a common question I could find elsewhere, but I’m having trouble finding a clear answer). TIA

With Common App itself, LORs are requested by the student after they’ve made their account. When the student adds a college to their “list,” there should be a button about LORs or FERPA.

Once the student has completed the FERPA release, they can invite recommenders to submit a recommendation using the recommender’s email. Then after that is completed the student “assigns” LORs to applications.

A link to the instructions for recommenders was recently posted here: How to get an outside-school rec letter? - #2 by tsbna44

Hopefully that helps!

Thanks so much!

Thank you!

Piggybacking on this thread with another LOR question. My son’s principal submitted a recommendation for him through Naviance. Can we then submit to schools through the Common App? Very unfamilar with how the process works. Would it count as one of his teacher LORs or is there a place to link an “other” LOR but through Naviance?

Naviance and the Common app are now integrated:

“Beginning with 2021-2022 applications, Naviance’s integration with Common App will move to a simplified one-and-done workflow. Going forward, this allows for only one submission per form type, including school reports, counselor recommendations, fee waivers, the optional and mid-year reports, and teacher evaluations. After submission, these forms will be made available to all colleges to which a student has applied or subsequently applies.” Member Support

And typically a principal LOR would be “other”, which there is a place for on the common app. The categories are “counselor” “teacher” “other” and “advisor”.
