I’m currently trying to work out which of my recommenders I’ll use and where (as in for which schools). For top schools like CalTech, or any of the Ivies, Carnegie Mellon, etc., do they like to see a more well-rounded student as far as interests/extracurriculars go, or do they feel it’s better to have a “specialized” student? I’ve known my band teacher for 4 years and excel with my instrument, but I also know my science bowl coach quite well (2 years) and he’d be able to write a great one too. Since I want to go into computer science though, should I use the science recommender to bolster my science background, or should I use my band recommender to show I’m more well-rounded? Which do top colleges love to see more of?
Many colleges require 2 academic recommendations (from teachers) and 1-2 additional recommendations. Perhaps you could submit more than the minimum 2 to these schools?
