<p>"My hands dug through piles of discarded food and paper lunch trays, as they did most every day. When done, I would bring full bags of compost out back to the dumpsters. This was composting at Ballard High School in all of its glory and splendor.</p>

<p>I got involved in Ballard’s composting program during my sophomore year when I discovered that a lot of the school’s compostable food waste went in the garbage. The thought of all this usable waste being left to rot in a landfill irked me, so I decided to do something about it. I started collecting uneaten food and paper waste from students after they finished their lunches and plucking compost out of garbage bins, and have been doing so ever since. Over the past year I’ve taken a leadership role in the program; now I’m held responsible for making sure the compost gets taken out. Composting can be a pain sometimes, but the knowledge that you’re keeping waste out of landfills, helping out the environment in some small way, can be quite a reward."</p>
