Common Data Set Question

Question concerning C5 - Distribution of high school units required and/or recommended.

Is a unit considered a year at the HS level, or a level of study? Specifically, my S took Spanish 1 in 7/8th grade, then Spanish II in 9th and Spanish III in 10th. If he stops language in Jr/Sr year, would that be only 2 units (Fr/So) or 3 units (Spanish III).

Additionally, one of the schools of interest lists 1 unit of visual/performing arts as a requirement. He doesn’t have that and won’t have that by graduation. Are the listed requirements a hard line in the sand?

You will receive different opinions on CC regarding this issue. In this case, I would recommend student take thru Spanish IV. The rub is that you likely don’t know what colleges your student is interested in and can not ask them this question, if certain colleges are likely to make the list, reach out to them. Have you/your student spoken to your high school GC?

Hard line in the sand for California publics. May be others too…if certain schools are likely to be targets, again, reach out to them.

The vast majority of responses will answer this correctly. The other responses will be flat-out wrong. Sadly, it’s not a Terms of Service violation to give incorrect info.

Fortunately, @Mwfan1921 is correct. For foreign language, level completed in synonymous with years studied for almost every college (and the exceptions are ones that are rarely discussed on this site). So completion of level 3 as a sophomore “counts” as 3 years. As an FYI, there’s a FAQ thread on this topic:

In terms of visual/performing arts, it is a hard line in the sand for California residents applying to CA publics (ditto for all the a-g requirements). There may be more flexibility for OOS (but the exceptions are so rare that one should assume they will not apply to one’s situation). I am not aware of any other college that **requires/b HS art.
