Hey, my friend, who wants to do computer science, is wondering what the typical career trek or first job is like for Computer Science majors at Cornell.

Also, what are the salaries like? Do most of them just end up as programmers?

guess i will answer for you…graduated in 06 with a B.S. in Computer Science. Average GPA…had a couple of offers during fall recruiting, and accepted a position with a consulting company in October (so almost a year before I graduated). Started in September of 2006, and have been splitting my time between working at home, and traveling to Phoenix Monday-Thursday. Pretty much exactly the type of position I wanted. It allows me to travel to different parts of the U.S. (dont get to choose…depends on where the project is) for free. Its def. not for everyone though…since most likely you will be spending the majority of your weekdays away from home.

But to answer your question…people do everything, whether it is a straight programming position at a company like google/microsoft/amazon, or consulting like I’m doing, and then there those who take a completely different path and get into finance as an analyst (a surprising number of top investment banks recruit Cornell engineers).

EDIT: oh yeah, average salary for B.S. in Computer Science is ~$65k (there is a pdf on the engineering website somewhere), but I’ve seen as high as > $100k after bonus with companies like google ($80k base + huge bonus)
