My essay is 1277 words, but there is really no way for me to cut it down. It includes many experiences that I went through while I went to 3 different high schools because I always had to move and I feel like I can’t get rid of any of these experiences. They eventually lead up to 1 conclusion and all connect

Is this okay? It’s a brilliant essay though…

The suggested length is 250-500 words. If there is no way to cut down your 1277 word essay, then perhaps you should select another topic, or accept the fact that you will not be able to cover as much and edit accordingly.

The essay does NOT need to cover everything. In 250-500 words, it gives the admissions committees an example of your writing, and a glimpse into who you are.

Your 1277 word essay may be wonderful, but it is too long for this purpose. Ignoring the instructions may hurt you in the application process.

I agree with the posts above, it is too long. While 250-500 words is only a guideline, you should adhere to it. I would say going over 700 would be visually noticeable to admissions, so try your best to edit it down. You say you wrote about many experiences, but why not just elaborate on one or two? Having too many topics in your essay can stray away from your objective.

Up to 600 words is fine and 700 is pushing it but probably ok. 1200 words is not ok. If you want to explain all these experiences, use the additional information section; the essay is the place to paint a picture, not to explain everything. It might be a brilliant essay, but that doesn’t matter if you can’t come close to following directions. You need to figure out a way to cut it by a half or start over your essay because a 1200 word essay is going to annoy colleges and hurt your application.
