So, I have chosen the topic about transitioning from childhood to adulthood within my culture. I have finished writing an essay, but I was wondering how good of an idea it is.
Basically, it is written about my 9th grade class trip to the national capital, Delhi, where only a month prior, a horrific gang rape incident had taken place. I introduced myself as a somewhat naive 14 year old thinking that this was an isolated event, not something that could occur to normal people or in normal, civilised society. Eventually, I saw the evidence of rape culture around the city on the trip - such as elaborate graffiti under a flyover calling it a “designated rape zone” - and really acknowledged the horrors of the world. I wrote about the fact that I believed being an adult was about realising that there was a world beyond the tiny microcosm of your life, and that the trip helped me understand that and thus transition to an adult in Indian culture.
What do you think?
