Commonwealth College: Admission/Scholarship

My GPA is 3.8 (unweighted), and my SAT score is 2000 (1330 V+M). However I’m not certain that I’m in the top 10% in my class of about 400. If I’m not, I’m very near it (like 11-12%) Is it possible to be admitted to CC if not in the top 10%? Are they flexible or is top 10% a requirement?

Also, what sorts of scholarships are available if I get into CC? Thanks a Bunch :)

I’m not sure how flexible they are on that; but I think I remember an admissions officer who came to my high school saying that if you were close they’d set your application aside to be reviewed by a special committee.

Also, the only scholarship I’m aware of that you can get for being in the Comm. College was $1000 max

How did you do on your 10th grade MCAS? If you got the highest score in either English or Math (I think it was Advanced), you qualify for a full tuition scholarship for 4 years to any state school. http://www.doe.mass.edu/FamComm/Student/122004adams_koplik.html

I haven’t gotten my MCAS results back yet. I’m expecting advanced on both sections, but I wont know for another month or so. I dont know why they wait so long to return them. Got to expect the worse though

Even if I do get the full tuition waiver, do you think I am still eligible for scholarships towards room and board and such? The low price of UMass is its main draw for me, so if I’m going to go I want it to be as cheap as possible! Thanks

Just remember, tuition at MA state colleges and universities is kept very low–fees are several thousand. That way the pols can say they aren’t raising tuition, but keep jacking up the fees.

My D was offered only about $1700 ‘free tuition’ at UMass-Amherst. Fees were in the neighborhood of 5K.

Just be forewarned. If you’re going to a state school anyway, the J/A Adams scholarships are worth a little bit of money. But ‘free tuition’ is is not what you would think.

My godson at UConn received a free ride, which included about 5K in tuition, and a much smaller amount in fees.
