Communication Skills

Does anyone else here have trouble communicating their thoughts verbally? I’ve found that while my writing is okay, my speaking tends to be embarrassingly cluttered… making it difficult for me to convince anyone or sell myself in person (i.e., in an interview). I’m actually okay at public speaking because I can rehearse what I want to say, it’s when I have to speak spontaneously that my thoughts get jumbled up and whatever my mouth chooses to say makes me sound like a moron.

(FYI, I used to think this was a common problem for bookish, introverted science nerds. Charming movie personas and some real-life encounters, however, have led me to believe that it’s just me.)

This is a problem for a good number of science majors and people in the field. I work in IT with a lot of computer science graduates and many cannot communicate. Find a way to work on this-- whether it’s toastmasters or a career counselor. The reason is those that are technical and can communicate are the ones that move up the ladder.
