Communications Course and English Pre-med Requirement

I am in CALS and need to compete 1 more course for my writing and communications category requirement. I was thinking of taking communications. Can someone please comment on this course, its difficulty, hw, exams, profs, etc? Thanks.

Also, in order to be a pre-med is english comprehension mandatory or will the freshman writing seminars and communications suffice this requirement. Also if this course is mandatory, can I just take the class in my senior yr? Thanks.

Which Comm course are you asking about?

I am actually not sure because I am a transfer student, but I looked at the CALS required courses pdf and under the writing category it had COMM, and it seemed like an ok course. Could you recommend one please? Thanks so much.

It really depends on what your interests are…although I do believe that all CALS students are now required to take public speaking which is COMM 201 (that’s the old number) so you should take that at some point. If time permits later on I recommend COMM 263: Organizational Writing and COMM 352: Science Writing for the Mass Media

Will this suffice my pre-med English requirement?

No it will not.

Your “freshman comp” courses are the ones that fulfill the English requirement. Cornell’s freshman writing seminars fulfill the requirement and the Knight Institute provides a letter to applicants saying this is so.

So by me taking a comp course, I will fulfill the requirement. Then what course would you recommend that would allow me to fulfill the pre-med English requirement which is not that time consuming nor difficult?

Did you take a full year of English at your previous institution? If you did, then you’ve got nothing to worry about.

If not, just fill out a ballot for the first year writing seminar. When you apply to medical school, the Knight Institute will provide you with a letter saying your FWS is comparable to freshman writing courses offered at other colleges.

I didn’t take any first year writing courses so I can’t recommend any. However, the FWS courses offered change almost every year.

Well I took a whole yr of writing which Cornell accepted under their fresh writing seminar codes, so I am assuming that my pre-med English requirement is complete then?

Yes…you’re find then.

What COMM is better 201 or 203? Which is easier and do both have exams?

Is comm 2010 really required for all CALS students? I definitely did not hear of that requirement…
