We are now down to these three colleges. Tuition is coming out to the same for all 3 colleges, unless we get a last minute full ride to either tOSU or MSU.
Any suggestions/feedback from parents who are aware of Communications in general and Communications in these colleges in particular, on how you’d order these 3 in terms of value/quality assuming two situations.
a) same tuition at all 3
b) full ride to either tOSU or MSU or both
That’s what my heart/money says. Just wondering if it’s worth spending $120K over a Michigan degree over full rides at the other two Unis (if we get it) for a Liberal Arts major such as Communication.
In the other case of same tuition at all 3 unis, how would you rank the three? Thanks.
I assume these costs mean you are instate at Michigan or Ohio State which gets rid of a factor in the Mich vs MSU for me which is that the OOS kids our school tracks have a much harder time socially at MSU because we don’t send many kids there. But a Michigan degree has so much more pull nationwide than the others that it’s not even a close call if money is the same. My daughter works at a NYC based company that will at least consider an applicant from any major from Michigan but would have no interest in the others. ( yes they are a bunch of school snobs…several of my Chicago based clients would feel the same ). A full ride is different and there I’d go with Ohio State over MSU because I think job opportunities are better in Ohio and the school has more pull there.
Well since it’s a rivalry… Lol… Michigan State and Ohio State have more in common as the type of students that go there. Michigan is honestly is a different category. The accepted there in Liberal Arts have a 3.9 unweighted with 32-35 avg Act. It’s a different feel altogether.
Saying this, My niece graduated Michigan State (got accepted at Michigan also) but had basically a free ride to State in communications and didn’t have a problem finding a job.
Does Uof M even have a communications major? They didn’t used to. I would pick MSU and Broad or J-School depending on interest or Ohio State unless U of M has developed a program. Then I would look into UofM and what the focus is of the program.
@thumper1 I don’t disagree, but I’m just not that familiar with the major. If the money were equal, I’d suggest UMich. But if you get a full ride, then I’d take that.
For the record, I have a kid at UMich. It’s also strange to see any Dept./major where UMich isn’t at least in the Top 10-15.
@MaineLonghorn Not sure what I am doing wrong in replying to this thread. Whatever I put in, it’s being flagged. I am just trying to reply to @sushiritto 's post regarding rankings. How can CWUR/SHanghai/Niche’s links be considered offensive?
@KenJennings. At least for Niche it is connected to a blog. Maybe the others as well. Check at the very bottom. You can’t post other social media article here. Anything that has people commenting on it like Niche. It’s against the rules. I honestly have been flagged several times just not understanding this. Sometimes I post an article quickly without looking since it’s such great advise. You could always copy /paste the article without linking it, might be a solution.
I do sometimes find this frustrating myself but never do it on purpose
@sushiritto This is where it gets really confusing.
According to comm.osu.edu/awards/school-comm-ranks-no.1
(CWUR and Shangai), it is tOSU/MSU/Michigan in that order. tOSU is ranked #1 according to both.
According to Niche, Michigan is #14, tOSU is 40, MSU is 47.
