I’m in need of advice. I have surfed the Cal forum and seen the discussion about these “weeder” classes that are apparently very difficult and competitve. I am looking to get out of those classes by taking classes over the summer at the local community college. I have a few questions.
Here’s the url from assist.
<a href=“Welcome to ASSIST”>Welcome to ASSIST;

How do I pass the R&C requirement? I don’t take English AP right now and this is supposed to be done before my first semester at Berkeley. Should I be worried?

As for the seven course breadth, I only have to take 1 class from each of the area to pass the requirement?

In relation to number 2, it says each course must carry a minimum of 2 semester units. Does that mean I can’t do it over the summer?

Any help would be appreciated.

You don’t have to finish the R&C requirements before you get to Berkeley. L&S recommends that these requirements be taken either freshman or sophomore year, but that’s it. The thing that they ask you to try to complete before your first semester is the [Entry Level Writing](http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/pyyac/freshman/subjecta.html), which must be satisfied before you take R&C courses.

Yes, you only need one class for each breadth.

Yes, you can satisfy it with JC courses. The “2 semester unit” thing simply means the course you take to satisfy the breadth must be at least 2 units or equivalent. If it’s listed on assist.org as transferrable, chances are it will transfer over to Berkeley.

Don’t panic. I didn’t take AP in HS either. All you gotta do is take the A and B series here. If you don’t have at least a 680 on the SATII or pass the AWPE offered by UC then u gotta spend more time taking the College Writing class which is 6 hardcore units and it fulfills the entry level writing req and ONLY the A part of the R&C req

Yes

Why not? 2 semester units doesn’t mean you have to take it for two semesters. It just simply means 2 semester units as opposed to 2 quarter units that other UCs have

if anything i think the L&S website is pretty informative and straight forward: http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/requirements/intro.html

winterpolaris, thanks for your help.
I still don’t quite understand though. For question number 3, if I take a quarter of say ARTS 1A at De Anza, does it mean I am done with the Arts and Literature area of the seven course breadth? Or does it mean I am 25% done with that area since De Anza has a quarter system?
Oh yeah, I also took a placement test at De Anza for writing. I passed that class and I am allowed to the EWRT 1A at De Anza, does that mean I passed the Entry Level Writing placement test?

Thanks again.

If the units directly transfer over from De Anza to Cal as noted on the ASSIST agreement, then yes, you’re done. It doesn’t matter that De Anza is on a quarter system, as long as the units are equivalent as indicated on ASSIST.

As for Entry Writing Level, here is more information about that. And apparently, they suggest you talk to your CC’s counselors.

Thanks, you guys.

Oh yes, any suggestions on which classes I should take at CC to get out of the most brutal classes at Cal?

Undeclared L&S. I’m thinking about MCB.

What are some classes that you wish you had taken at a community college before actually going to Berkeley?
