I’m confused. Is dual enrollment only when CC courses are taken at the high school or does it refer to any CC course taken while a student is in high school, even if the student enrolls in the CC course independent from the high school?
And would the latter invalidate them from applying as a freshman in college and make them a transfer student?
No. College courses taken while in HS don’t preclude applying as a freshman
Technically, DE means the course appears on the HS transcript and the CC transcript, hence “dual.” Those courses are usually, but not always, taken in the HS
College courses that aren’t part of the HS transcript are technically not DE, but the reality is people are loose with their usage of the term.
A college course that also gives high school credit is a dual enrollment course, regardless of whether it is taken at a high school, at a college, or in online / distance format.
College courses taken while enrolled in high school generally do not invalidate the student’s ability to apply for frosh admissions. College courses taken after leaving high school usually do require the student to apply as a transfer, though the rules do vary depending on the college applied to (e.g. some may require applying as a transfer only after some minimum number of credits of college courses after leaving high school).
Yes, college courses taken while enrolled in high school generally do not invalidate frosh standing for admission to colleges.
Colleges that are not the college where the courses were taken may have various limits on transfer credit, depending on their policies. For example, some have overall limits on transfer credit, some have smaller limits for frosh entrants, and some do not give credit for college courses taken at the high school or college courses used to fulfill high school graduation requirements.
Subject credit and advanced placement may be determined differently. For example, a transferred college course may be given credit, but not be given subject credit to fulfill any requirements or fulfill prerequisites for advanced placement in the subject. Or it may be given no credit, but be allowed to fulfill prerequisites for advanced placement.
