Where are you applying? What are your stats? What year are you? Discuss away!

I’m applying to USC, and Cornell ILR. Applying for fall 2011 admission, junior standing at Cornell, just about junior standing at USC. Hs stats are embarrassing, College stats are

3.79 GPA (by the end of this semester, currently about a 3.7)
ECs- Full-time job, Phi Theta Kappa, Habitat for Humanity, Guitar Teacher (volunteer), etc…
Something Different About Me- Attempting to start a business roasting gourmet coffee beans

I’m still finalizing my college list, but I’ll be applying to Brown for their Modern Culture/Media program as a junior. I’m currently on a gap year now working to save for school and fulfilling some personal goals that I wouldn’t be able to pursue otherwise.

HS Stats: 3.2 GPA, Mediocre EC’s

College Stats: 3.93 GPA, First Honors Program Graduate, All-State Academic Team, Multiple School Scholarships, Phi Theta Kappa, Theatre Arts Student Organization, Student Rep On Lecture Series Committee

EC’s - Professional Fire performer, currently holding two jobs (one as a lifeguard, one at a PR Firm), Volunteer at Pirate Re-enactment events, Medieval Re-enactment heavy fighter, Contributing writer for Seattle-based Fashion Website, . Looking to Volunteer at a movie theater soon.

Other factors - 1st gen. College student, I’m on a gap year, and my personal goal is to start a fire troupe at whatever college I end up at.

With community college, I find that it’s hard wanting to transfer to a more selective school because the resources provided for us are usually for other things. It’s nice having company.

I’m still deciding on where to apply, but Harvard is for sure. Brown, Stanford, Columbia, UChicago, and Cornell might end up on my list. Then there’s definitely Cal and UCLA since a Californian. I wouldn’t be disappointed if I ended up going to Davis.

I don’t want to be too specific on my background since it’s wonky. I’ll have the credits of a junior after this semester, but this is technically my first as a college student. HS GPA was 4.0, college GPA is 3.97 (and we’ll see how this semester goes…), and SAT I was 660 CR, 650 M, 610 WR - ouch. No SAT IIs yet, but I don’t usually don’t test well. As for ECs, I’ll keep it vague and say that I’m involved with two campus organisations and I volunteer.

Does anyone know of any CC transfer success stories? I just love to hear them.

Hi, everyone.
I will be keeping an eye on this thread. I have two years free at a CC that I might take advantage of. I would really like to end up at UChicago, Georgetown, etc.

MyrLing,

That’s really nice; CC is such a wallet friendly decision. Where would you go if you don’t head to CC?

That is a complicated question. I’m in the process of creating a list of prospective universities. My current choices have been narrowed down to those with strong undergraduate linguistics programs. I’m having a hard time identifying my safeties, matches, and reaches. I have very strong grades (top 10%) and good EC’s, 33 on my ACT (potentially higher, still waiting for my second score to come), but I was out of school for a year due to several medical conditions and my transcript reflects that. I have two A’s for my Junior year and six incompletes for the second semester.
I may need to lower my standards. It’s very depressing.

Ouch, sorry about your difficulties. Good luck.

I’m going to be applying to Stanford, UCLA, UCI, Harvard, and Columbia.

Crappy hs gpa 3.2 ( Wasn’t motivated or focused :l )

Constructive Criticism Welcome!!!

^ I guess we’re competition. ;)

However, I’ve been talking to Harvard and we settled that I should apply as a freshman. Still, most likely my admissions officer will move me to the transfer pool. We’ll see.

At any rate, g’luck!

I would wish you good luck, but I need that luck lol jk

But really, good luck its slim chances out there we both know

@ bostoncrmpie:

you can apply as a freshman after going to college for awhile?

@belief

Depends on the school’s policy. I started college much younger than the average student so I was under a grey area in frosh/transfer distinctions under Harvard’s old policy. They had me initially apply frosh - the deadline was sooner - and would decide later where I belong. I was notified that the rules have changed recently, so now I’m a transfer applicant. I already had a freshman app in; they moved my info from one pool to another.

If you’re curious, I’ve checked out how other institutions handle such cases. MIT has (or had) the same policy as Harvard did, and Stanford would have considered me a freshman applicant had I been using my college credit towards a high school degree. I didn’t apply to MIT seeing as my academic background would have made my application a joke and I am still working on a transfer application for Stanford so I have no further knowledge of how distinctions are made.

I “graduated” high school relatively recently, and before I was a concurrent student at a couple local community colleges. If I had stayed that way, I would have been considered a freshman at all universities I know of despite having a substantial amount of college credit.

If you’re looking for less specific cases, then you should know that part-time students, even those of mature age, are usually considered freshmen. Well, as far as I know.

I feel like I’m disclosing TMI, but there you have it!

Edited: Wow, I can’t even remember posting on this thread before.

Ha! 10char

bump yet again!

Applying for Columbia GS, UT Austin and a local city college.

Highschool: Dropped out halfway through 10th grade to work and support family, got GED while in the military.

College: 3.12GPA. Failed a class due to deployment in Fall, accepted responsibility in essay. Re-taking class this semester, expect to finish with 3.73.

SAT: Terrible math score, others were well above 700.

Recs: One with high remarks but somewhat impersonal, other is good and more personal.

EC: Phi Theta Kappa, VP of local Psi Beta chapter, Founder/President of Philosophy Club, Local school Honor Society, National level Chess player, Founded group to teach senior citizens computers for free.

Essay: After looking it over, almost looks like a movie script. A+ in my opinion.

Possible Hooks:
-Rags to riches:Went from bad family and being homeless in the ghetto to active duty military/war zones, saw the world and now applying for Ivy League.
-Caucasian, but can speak Chinese and Spanish
-10 years in active duty military
-Conducted original psychology research for honors program.
-Invited by school to moderate school philosophy event which had a sizable audience (100+) and notable speakers.
-Used essay to show deep desire to overcome my past and displayed extensive knowledge of GS program.

Oh, and anyone reading with a spare moment, I welcome you to chance me :P
