Hi.
I’m going to be starting CC in the spring. I am an excellent student but I took IGCSE and did nt score well because two of my grandparents died during my examination period and I was dealing with a lot of anxiety and depression therefore I did not perform well in my exams. Unfortunately, the school I went to does not provide transcripts or grades, they merely provide you with preparation for the IGCSE exams.

I decided to go to community college because my IGCSE grades will probably not get me into any university.

I want to go to CC for two years then transfer to a school with a good premed program, but I heard that med schools sometimes frown upon prerequisites taken at CC so I do not want to take any chances. I do not want to take any of my prereqs at CC except ones that I’ll need to get an associates degree (ex: English, calc)

My question is: what courses should I take at CC? What courses will allow me to transfer to a good if not great premed program without having to take any prereqs at CC.

Sorry for the long post, I’m just really nervous and would appreciate your answers.

You should check if the CC has any matriculation agreements with nearby or in state colleges/universities. Talk to the counselor at the cc and also talk to admissions at the universities you have in mind. I’ve never heard of issues with taking courses at cc and then transferring to most “pretty good” universities.

I am in the same position as you. I too would like to get into a prestigious pre medical program, but also transfer into a top University. I was a high school drop out, never liked school. But me dropping out of school was probably the best thing. To make a long story short, I graduated and went to a community college. I finished my first year and have a 3.9 GPA. I also do other volunteer work, as well as work in my school (academic advisement) and in an honor society (phi theta kappa).

You said something that always floats in my mind when I choose my courses, that is how medical school views pre requisite classes from a CC. Honestly, I am a math and science major here at CC, and I am taking general biology and general chemistry, as well as finishing calculus. But what I am deciding on doing is, to be able to redeem myself, I not only need to gain admission to a top university, but I am also planning on double majoring in Math and Biochemistry.

Try to be as competitive as possible. More volunteer, higher grades, like boost everything up.

The MCAT is the great equalizer. I know at least one current resident who went the CC route for 2 years and sailed into med school after transferring into her state flagship. As for myself, I received an a BS in EE at a state flagship but completed biology and organic chem at 3 local CC. It was never an issue though this was 20 years ago. I was accepted in 5/5 medical schools.

Focus on getting through with a high GPA and do well on the MCAT. IMHO, the MCAT will make up for the school factor.
