Does anyone know if the Community Service Scholarship is considered a merit scholarship? The Tulane website says that a student cannot accept two merit scholarships, and must choose between one and the other.

I’ve received the Distinguished Student Award and the Community Service Scholarship, and it would be amazing if I could keep both.

well you should be able to keep both-thats quite an accomplishment to be recognized for both of those-interesting how they didnt jus give you the deans award… but yea hopefully they allow you to get both awards-you def deserve them

I didn’t apply in time for deans, but can I definitely keep them both?

Blueyed1, you should talk to someone in admissions. Scholarships are merit based while grants and loans are need based. If the website states that you can only keep one Tulane merit and must choose, then I would think that would be the case here. Do not make a decision about financially feasibility until you have spoken to Tulane.

Blueyed, I went and looked for the Community Service Scholarship, and could not find it on Tulane’s or any other site. The only non-merit scholarship I could find at Tulane is the Tulane Scholarship, which many schools would call a grant. But, the site explicitly says that the DSA may not be combined with any other merit scholarship, so unless someone at Tulane tells you it is not merit (which I doubt) you had better count on only one. Call them.

How did the notification come - mail, e-mail or what?

It came in the mail.

The community service scholarship is the renamed one for the previous urbans scholars award that was reworked post Katrina. I think all would apply that applied to Urban if that helps.

In that case, the Urban’s was for full tuition. That’s all you would get with the DHS. The fees and room and board are up to you. They won’t apply the DSA to the latter, I’m pretty sure.

I got the Founder’s scholarship and the Community Service one. Can I keep both or do I have to choose one?

So what was your community service that got you the scholarship?

I had a lot of community service one, but the main on was my work at the zoo and Amigos de las Americas.

I’ve been teaching tap dance (usually 5 classes a week) to different age groups (4 years old to adult) at my local YMCA for the last 3 years.

I finally got through to someone who could help me, and i need to choose between the two scholarships. They’re for the same amount of money, but I’m not sure on what the differences will be between the two as far as what i need to do to maintain it/any perks it offers.

Tulane’s message board says that for partial scholarships you have to maintain a 2.7 GPA and for full tuition scholarships, a 3.0 GPA. I think the community service award has some minimum comm. service hours that you have to do too. Congrats on both…

Specifically- Partial and full tuition scholarships community service scholarships is what I was referring to above.
