Commuting Community College Students

Happykid and several of her friends will be living at home for the next two years and commuting to our local community college. Happydad commuted all four years of college, but I went to a place 900 miles from home. Any advice for us so that Happykid has a good experience, and is ready to move on to the next place in two years?

Working in the library of a community college, I see all kinds of students come and go. My advice to you would be let happykid take on the responsibilities of college just as he would if he were at a residential college. I see so many young students who still let mom or dad handle issues that come up because they still live at home and are still in the “high school” mind set. It is easy to be a “helicopter parent” when you have your college student at home.

Also, even though he may live at home, encourage him to take full advantage of the college’s resources, i.e. the library, student center, computer labs, etc. It’s in these places where socializing happens and friends can be made. He should also participate in school activities and clubs. He may find a friend or two that will transfer to the same college after the two years at the CC are done.

Hope some of this helps. Good luck to your son!
