How do you think they compare? What about student life at each?

A short question that would take a long answer. :-)

The short answer is UChicago is the ultimate “intellectual” liberal arts experience - explore, experiment, find yourself, study classics. CMU, for the most part, is the ultimate profesional training education (in certain fields such as electrical engineering, theatre, computer science, music) - no place for trying things to see if you might like it, but superbly prepared for work upon graduation.

BTW, the 2 schools are in the same sports league (w/ Case Western, WashUStL, URochester, NYU, Emory, & Brandies).

I recommend you read up on the schools in these 2 books:

“The Insiders Guide to the Colleges 2005” Yale Daily News and

“Choosing the Right College, The Whole Truth about America’s Top Schools” ISI Books.

For student life, read these reviews:

thanks t990, that was very interesting. i didn’t realize they were so different.

cmu focuses on real careers like engineering/comp science/theatre/business

chicago is a stepping stone (although a high one) to further studies or careers.

the creative writing program at cmu is ranked as one of the top in the nation

I never really thought of them as that similar. Chicago is “the place” for liberal arts studies- it rivals the greats. CMU to me is more a professional route where you’re being tailored for a career. But it is one of the best schools in the nation at doing so. I don’t really think either school is good for “let’s see if I like it” because if you don’t like your program, you’re either stuck or have to transfer. CMU doesn’t have a ton of quality choices, granted it’s a great school, but it’s a lot more limited. On the other hand, UChi is very liberal-arts minded, and if that’s not your thing you might be stuck in programs that could pull down your gpa (i.e. med school)

actually to employers cmu might be better but if you want to continue studying and staying in school than uchicago might be better.

When you consider Carnegie Mellon these schools come to mind: MIT, Cornell, Case Western, Rice, Harvey Mudd, RPI, Caltech, Cooper Union.

U of Chicago to me is more similar to ivies like Columbia or Harvard, also Swarthmore, maybe Reed or Oberlin.
