Decision between Purdue (Daniels School of Business), UMass Amherst (Isenberg Business School), Pamplin Business (Virginia Tech) or Syracuse School of Information
Based on what?
Congrats! I recommend you focus on finances and fit in making your decision. Different reasonable people could make different choices depending on their criteria.
The outlier seems to be Syracuse as you are not in the business school. What course of study to you want to
pursue?
Is any instate?
What majors are you considering ?
Did you get into Honors anywhere?
If you calculate (tuition, fees, room, board ) - (scholarships, grants)= , what result do you get for each?
D24 an international student has received admit from all above in Business undecided (UMass - 14 K scholarship and VT), Purdue - Business analytics and Syracuse in School of Information (10K scholarship) - Informationa Management and Technology. She is an IB student with Business HL and CS - SL. Trying to figure out the best option out of three with best course with good career options in future.
Are all of these affordable; did your D visit and does she have a preference in terms of location, weather, social life, etc?
None of us can predict the labor markets or the economy 5 years from now. So what makes a “good career option” really depends on your D- how ambitious she is, how hard she works, etc. AND the economy- who is hiring new grads and how many are they hiring.
Thanks, I understand they are affordable but was evaluating from the perspectives of rigor in the course, they are majorly engineeting college so whether courses in Business are good?
All of them are great colleges with solid business programs. Purdue and VT may be known in your country for engineering, but they also have many other majors.
When looking to go far from home, there may be other factors to consider as well. Do you have any family or family friends near or within a couple of hours any of the 4 colleges? Which of them have airports that are close by or trains/buses that get to major airports? (Example - some airports may not have public transportation to get to them- I just paid more for a private shuttle to a small regional airport for my daughter to get home for spring break than the flight cost.) Research which of them have dorms that stay open over breaks for international students or have other supports for them.
Have her look at the flexibility in course pathways for the majors within the departments. What courses would be required and are those of interest? Sometimes a specific business major sounds interesting but is more math focused than they realize or requires additional prerequisites that they were not interested in. This may help them find something very unique that they want to be a part of at one of the colleges.
Review the total costs and fees. Scholarships are excellent, but make sure you are looking at total for tuition, fees, room and board.
Thank you so much for the feedback. I will definitely look into few of the pointers which I never thought of before.
