Comparing

Let’s say I wanted to apply to the same University as my friend (non-Ivy League, maybe UConn/URI/etc.). Both have 3.4 GPAs and basically the same amount of varsity sports/Extra Curriculars. However, my friend took Honors classes (English/Biology/History) in 10th and 11th grade while I took standard courses. In 12th grade, I make AP English Literature and am taking Physics and Pre-Calculus. He however, being in those honor english classes, was permitted to skip English for his senior year and is opting out of Physics for a Pre-Medical half day elective. That takes up his schedule so he can’t take any other classes except for particular ones that are required.

My question comes in two parts.

 1. Will the full course load with some elective classes like Band, Photography, Psychology and Creative Writing in my senior year give me a buffer for the regular courses I took in previous years? (If that makes sense, ha)

2) How well do I rack up against my friend? Will his honors classes from earlier count more than my own?

(This is all hypothetical since I’m not a senior yet though my friend is looking into that Pre-Med elective.)

1) Hmmm… I guess it really depends where you’re applying. If most of the applicants are taking honors courses, then your electives won’t do much b/c many of the kids taking honors courses will also be taking similar electives… think about this on a national/global scale… you’re not just competing against yoru friend.

2) Your friend’s honors courses look better than your regular courses. Is the Pre-Medical half day elective a joke class? If so, then adcoms will see right through it.

Well, if you both have 3.4 unweighted (im assuming) GPA’s, his looks a lot better, because that means he has gotten B’s in honors classes, while you got them in regular classes. How do you think that looks?

Agreed.

^ Congratulations on 6-sixty nine!!! Sorry, I’m still immature… hehe.

I figured as much; of course his Bs in honors classes look better than my own in regular. I’ll do my best to even it out and get As for second semester, since Journalism is over and I’m taking Health I don’t have to worry about many deadlines and I can focus on maintaining As in Math and English and try to get up there in Chemistry and History.

“Congratulations on 6-sixty nine!!! Sorry, I’m still immature… hehe.”

That took me a while to figure out, cause I had no idea what you were talking about haha. But then it was my post numbers.

Good luck Water, I totally know how you feel about comparing yourself with your friends. I mean, I know we should all be looking at how we do. I have a good friend, who thinks she is all that, because she applied to Yale and Davidson, and kind of acts like I am 10x dumber than her, even though she is only 10 above me in rank (in a class of 600, so not that big of a deal). It’s nice to know when you beat people like that, sometimes getting better grades on tests, or in the same classes. I am proud to go to a public state university. At least Im in the honors college.

Just try to do your best, nothing wrong with that.
