A quick question, could someone describe the competition between students in the transfer pool? I understand that because of limited space it is obviously tougher to secure a spot, however, I’m just wondering if one competes against the same quality of students that he/she would during regular or early app period.

From the research and some comments on threads, it’s kids like the #1 internationally ranked athlete, or the #1 violinist in the world, or someone with that kind of merit who get it. So I just want to know, were these candidates chosen simply because they were more qualified or are transfer applicants generally stronger.

"As competitive as the admissions process is for freshmen, the transfer process is even more so. Yale receives more than 1,000 transfer applications each year, and we have spaces for only 20 to 30 students. Given the competitive nature of the transfer admissions process, candidates should have compelling reasons for attending Yale and should think carefully about whether Yale is the right fit for them before making the effort to complete an application.

The Admissions Committee meets once a year in the spring to consider all transfer candidates for the coming academic year. The transfer application deadline is March 1 (TOMORROW). Candidates will be notified of their admissions decisions by mid-May."

While comments here and on the Transfer Students forum stress that the transfer admit rate is extremely low, the two examples you’ve given are exaggerations. Academically strong, interesting students who AOs think have something special to add to their Y class are accepted.
