Does anyone know of any competitive summer programs (preferable dealing with science) that are relatively short (about a week) and inexpensive?

not science, sorry. Do you like Economics?

[Foundation for Teaching Economics | Economics & Leadership Sites and Dates](http://www.fte.org/students/efl/dates.php)

competitive
short
inexpensive

i think the cornell nanobiotech program is short, not 100% sure though. search on this forum and you should find more info on it

Wow, MidwestMom, that looks great. Do you have anything else along those lines up your sleeve?

Girls on Ice, science and mountaineering combined, very interesting but not for everybody. One caution, when my D applied a couple of years ago there were several essays and a recommendation required. But in the end, they picked the 10 or so participants via a lottery! Haven’t checked them recently, so they might have changed their policies.

“competitive” what do you mean by that? you mean, some thing in terms of challenging or something that “looks” competitive to colleges?

It means you’re not automatically in just because you apply and can pay for the program. Competitive programs will require some combination of essays, recommendations, grades and scores upon which they will evaluate you against other applicants. Some programs are as selective as the highest ranked colleges, with acceptance rates of less than 10%.

These programs also tend to be competitive in the two meanings that you have stated.

Girls on Ice certainly meets the “inexpensive” criterion - it’s free.
Looks interesting.
Here’s the link:

awesome, midwestmom, keep it coming!!

wow midwestmom, how’d you know all these programs?

I wish there were some Boys on Ice!!! that sounds really nice program!

do you know of anymore midwestmom?

no, since summer programs are VERY self-selective, the acceptance rates are usually in the 30%. even the most prestigious ones =)

unless it’s tASP or RSI

that sounds fun, but i swear, im going to like die

Narcissa,
If you’re going to quote, please use the whole sentence so as to not mislead people. You can see that I said “some programs”, in reference to TASP and RSI:

“Some programs are as selective as the highest ranked colleges, with acceptance rates of less than 10%.”

And by the way, Girls on Ice has an acceptance rate of about 10% too.
