competitive school vs non competitive

I go to Clements High School, which is a top 10 caliber school in the Houston area. However many of my friends go to schools that are not that competitive and are easily in the top 10 %. I’m not super smart and don’t take all honors and don’t get all As in them, so I cant be qualified for top 10% at Clements. This is really ****es me off when my friends make lower or the same scores as me and qualify for top 10% at their school. At Clements i would be around top 30-35%(I’m trying hard to have a better rank). To add on to that mostly all colleges in Texas consider class rank as one of the most important factor when you apply. If your not top 10% you cant get into a good school like UT,Trinity, or automatic admission to A&M.
So… I wanted to know if there are any colleges who don’t consider class rank as an important factor.(out of Texas) I only know 1 -St.Johns University, NY…

any others??

Handy Andy- (yes i did just change your name) I hear that a lot of competitive schools send a really large percentage of their students to top top colleges. IDK, maybe your school is one of 'em. Colleges do look at the competitiveness of your school. Plus, score a super high SAT and you’ll be fine

if its so hard, then it should be less of a factor in such a competitive school.

With 6 USAMO qualifiers and 2 MOPpers in 2007, your school is definitely very competitive, just hang in there and try to do your level best. I’m sure most if not all top colleges know about the caliber of your school.

different schools have different ranks and from your school, the admission officers will know that you go to a competitive school and they’ll compare you to the other top 10% students

My school is HIGHLY competitive a 3.8 would probably put you in the 15-25% range…I think. BUT, if you qualify for an honors ranking, it gives your ranking a huge boost because it only puts you up against others that have an honors ranking–so basically, the kids taking regular classes are pushed to the bottom automatically.

Ha, you have to get a 4.0 at my school to go anywhere worth while because it’s such an easy school.

My school is not competitive at all lol. I’ve recently dethroned another girl for the #1 ranking in my class out of 200. At a more competitive school, I’d probably be top 5%-top 10%, but definitely not #1.

I understand how you feel. My school is so easy lol. I have to second what musicallylatin said regarding my hs. It may not be fair but all you can do is suck it up and deal with it.

I don’t know of any schools that don’t consider rank to be important; however, if your school is as competitive as you say, then universities will be a bit more forgiving of your low rank.

Our school doesn’t give rankings due to those reasons.

“Someone in the top 25% can easily be in the top 10% of another school.” Or so they say.

Mine’s a decent public school, not too shabby but not too great either. I’m happy with it.

My school is kinda weird. In terms of rank, it basically goes two people who don’t cheat to get A’s, a bunch of people who would step over their own mothers to cheat and get A’s, a couple of people who don’t cheat, then 99% of the class that is somewhat indifferent and/or cheats but still manage not to do that well.
