Competitive Summer Camps and When to Start

Hello all, I am a newbie. I recently heard that summer of 2011 is counted as a summer of high school on college application for a kid entering high school in the fall of 2011. In other words, this summer is very important for an upcoming high school kid.
If this is the case, then, we miss all the application deadline for a lot of “competitive summer camps”. What remedy could you recommend to a kid who is good at math and music? Does volunteer work we do in this summer count as volunteer hours in college application?

Relax a bit! The summer before freshman year is probably the least important part of your college app. Use this time to relax a bit before schools starts and hang out with friends. If you want something to do, I would suggest volunteer (which will count for volunteer hours) to help get some prospective on life or understand yourself better.

You’ll have plenty of time for competitive summer programs after freshman, sophomore, and junior year. So, do something you’ll enjoy to enrich yourself and better know what you want from life.
