Completely miserable at college, hate major, failing classes: What to do??

Hello, I’m posting on behalf of a dear friend of mine. He believed he wanted to go into engineering, and is currently attending a small, alright engineering/STEM-exclusive school in the middle of nowhere. He is not doing very well, and is completely miserable. In addition, he has discovered he now hates engineering and would like to try out marketing/business or architecture (a departure from his current proposed civil engineering major). The issue is, his GPA is pretty low (at best a 3.0 at end of semester), and his chances of passing Calculus are not high.

He would like to transfer to a new school, but I am wondering what kind of schools he should look at? His high school GPA wasn’t any better (around a 2.8) but he has decent scores (33 ACT I think). He needs a school with a variety of majors, definitely art/architecture and marketing, that isn’t extraordinarily expensive (he isn’t eligible for financial aid, but his GPA is too low for many scholarships). Also, should he be applying as a transfer or freshman?

One school we were looking at is Lesley University in Cambridge, which offers a dual Marketing/Design degree. It looks like his high school GPA is about .3 below their average accepted, but his test scores are much higher than their avg. His tuition would likely be similar to what his parents pay now. Does this seem like a good option? I’m worried that he might be interested in this school mainly because it’s so close to where I will be attending next year in Cambridge.

Any advice is welcome and thank you so much!

Lesley is an adorable, albeit tiny school. The tour we did took us through 3 buildings and then back through the 3 same buildings (ha ha).

It’s known for being a great place to go for teacher training, but it also has an arts program. The male:female ratio is about 25:75. Would that bother him?
