Completing CSI Profile: PI-150, Itemized Deductions are greater than PI-135 Adjusted Gross Income

Hi. I am the non-custodial parent of a college student who goes to a school that requires the CSI Profile from only the custodial parent. My college student and ex report that the CSI Profile (not FAFSA) has reported an error to them that my Ex’s itemized deductions under PI-150 (IRS 1040 line 29, Schedule A) is greater than her PI-135 Adjusted Gross Income (IRS 1040 line 37), and that’s causing a problem. While I don’t have access to her 2013 tax return, I know she has relatively low 2013 income and is a home owner so getting mortgage, RE taxes, and also had some medical deductions, thus it makes perfect sense to me that her itemized deductions are higher than her reported AGI. Is there a way to answer the PI-150 question to solve this issue? Is there something she may be doing wrong here that I can advise her about? Please suggest approaches or issues to look at to solve this problem… Thanks very much, as we’re struggling to get this done ASAP. Cheers!

Just guessing here. If itemized deductions are greater than AGI that just reduces taxable income to 0. I don’t see any benefit to putting more in answer to that question than the amount of deductions that would get taxable income to 0. Since the profile is generating that error, it seems the thing to do, the excess deductions may be deemed irrelevant.

The school is wondering how your former spouse is paying her day to day bills with a negative income. They are well within their rights to ask for documentation of her expenses, and income…and to answer how her bills are being paid with negative income.

She needs to contact the college directly and find out what the issue is and what information they need to reconcile it.

Thanks for those tips!
