If your composite is a good notch above the average at the schools you’re looking at, but your break-down is unflattering (i.e., one subject is extremely high, while the other two are relatively unremarkable), are you still okay? Or is it better to retake and even the numbers out?

I’m mostly looking at top publics (such as UNC), with a few high second-tier privates, if it makes a difference.

Some schools take the best of each section. Check to see if yours do. If that is the case, then most definetly retake.

Personally, I’m a really inconsistent test taker(it really has to do with how I’m feeling that day, my focus on these types of tests is really volatile, somehow I just can’t take the SAT seriously…)----so I found that the second time I took the test, the subject I had done less well in skyrocketed up while the other section plummetted, just because I was in a reading mood the first time I took it and a math mood the second time, which benefitted because then I had 2 good and 2 not so good scores for each section and colleges only took the good ones. =) I’d say go ahead and try once more.
